day 7.. sad news

We had an interesting morning, during the group reports. Since we don’t speak the same language, the time allotted for each reporter was doubled so that the interpreters can translate for the others.

There were six groups; 30 minutes for each group. After lunch, we had a guest speaker who taught us about problem-solving strategy. Either he was so boring or I’m just really, really sleepy, but i sort dozed off in the middle of the class. Apparently, he saw me nodding off, so he gave us a 10-minute break. And of course, I immediately rushed out to get coffee. Good thing, there was vendo machine on the 1st floor. That small cup of coffee saved me for the rest of the afternoon.

Back to my room, I had a sad news from my mother. Tita Elvie, my mom’s friend, lost her mother today. I have friends who have lost their own moms. I just can’t imagine life without my mama. I give all my condolences to Tita Elvie and her family. I hope you all find peace in the midst of your grief. Just always remember the happy moments and do not let sadness rule your heart.

day 6.. MIB 3

Sunday.. fine day.. in my opinion, there’s no better day in a week.. (Vernon Dursley)

Just this once, I think I agree with Uncle Vernon. I wasn’t able to post a blog last night since we got home very late and I was dead tired. But even though all I want was to get underneath the covers, I had to finish the report for today.

Anyway, for our break, Divina and I met her old high school friend, Mari (with her sister, Mika). We met at the Hachioji Station where we saw many people running very fast to catch the train. There were also groups of people of all ages hanging around while waiting for their companions. It took Mika and Mari a while to get to the station, so Divina and I did some window shopping in the nearest department store (inside the station). We found so many pretty clothes, shoes and bags, but the prices were quite beyond our capabilities for now.

When they finally arrived, we had lunch at a steak house near the station. It was a little expensive but all worth it - the food was very delicious and filling (we didn’t eat breakfast). Afterwards, Mika led us to a cinema where we watched MIB 3. It was the strangest cinema I’ve ever seen. For one, the ticket machine is similar to vendo machine, where you need to put the money first then pick the movie you want to watch. And for another, the audience were all SO quiet, even in the funniest parts. The four of us had quite a hard time concealing our giggles.

After two hours of silent laughter (vibration mode), we were finally free from the stiff atmosphere of the cinema (which we laughed about once we were outside). We went around Hachioji looking for game stores with Purikura, or Japanese photo booth. After maybe 3 or 4 stores, we finally found one, and immediately made one of us. It was fun, just like the photo booths in the Philippines, only with more design (very cute designs). Just one annoying thing is the machine’s auto setting of adding make-up and enlarging the eyes. I mean, my eyes are already big and round, I don’t need a machine to emphasize it even more. But, the final result looked good. Mika and Mari were experts in designing the pictures, and the four of us each got one copy for souvenir.

We also went to a karaoke near the station. The rooms were big and fully air-conditioned. We also get one drink, which can be alcoholic or non-alcoholic (we chose the latter). Apparently, Divina’s voice suits Japanese songs very well. We sang a mix of English and Japanese songs (I sang English.. :P) Mika and Mari were very good singers, I felt a bit intimidated with my voice. We had solos, and duets. Mari’s talent was singing in an almost baritone voice - so handsome male voice. She and her sister would usually sing duets this way, Mika as the girl and Mari as the boy.

For dinner, we head to the nearest McDonald’s. Like KFC, they don’t serve rice in McDo. Good thing, they have fries as side dish and we were able to survive with simple protein and few carbs. It was quite late, so we head directly back to the station to make sure we can still go home. After almost two hours, we were finally back but still no time to sleep. We had to edit the report about our field work last Saturday. Around 12 midnight, I surrendered to my tiredness and sleepiness and I decided to roll into bed. And that was the end of my fine day, Sunday… :D

day 5.. Lost and Found

Today is a special day: we went to Yokohama to do our group field work. We were assigned to go to Takashimaya and Yokohama World Porters. It was our first time riding the trains on our own, and it was very thrilling.

First, we went to Yokohama Takashimaya, a very high-end mall with expensive brands. To get there, we rode the Seaside Line from Sangyo Shinko Center to Shin Sugita. Then we transferred in JR Negishi Line to Yokohama. From there, we just walked out of the station to Takashimaya. The mall was 8-stories high with each floor categorized in different section: women’s wear, men’s wear, children’s wear, household, and food court. We toured all floors to find how it compares with the malls in the Philippines.

Next, we went to Yokohama World Porters. We went back to Yokohama Station and rode the Minato Mirai Line. We alighted on Bashamichi and walked to World Porters. It was nice and a lot cheaper than Takashimaya. We had lunch at KFC where they don’t offer rice, and the food was eaten by hand.

After finishing our missions, we visited Yamashita Park to watch a dragon boat race. We also went around China Town. It was nice to see the winding streets without rain. We went to a shop where all their merchandise were designed with panda. We decided to go visit the Doll Museum while our other companions decided to go back to YKC.

We found the museum, but as we were about to pay, I realized that my wallet is not in my bag. I panicked and I think I scandalized the museum a bit (I’m so, so, so, sorry, Divina!!). I called Ms. Rina for help, but all she said was to try to trace my wallet by calling the police (who don’t speak english, btw) and call my card companies to cancel my ATM and credit cards - which is kind of depressing. Divina and I traced back our steps to World Porters. Fortunately, the people in the mall were all helpful. Apparently, I misplaced it in KFC, and someone found and surrendered it to the information desk. I am so thankful to that person who was my good samaritan (whoever she/he may be).

Unfortunately, we ran out of time to go back to Doll Museum. We decided to go back to YKC. We had a stop-over at a convenience store and bought vanilla soft serve ice cream (comfort food?). We found our way back to YKC just before dinner time. All in all, it was an interesting day. I learned a lesson: always double-check my stuff before leaving. And yes, Divina - next time, I won’t panic. I really am sorry about today. But, there is always a next time. :D

Sweet dreams!

day 4.. Shin Chan

Fourth day. Our morning started off normal with breakfast. For the morning lecture, we had a guest speaker who discussed the importance of business manners. She made us do exercises on proper bowing and exchanging calling cards. I had the unfortunate timing of being partnered with a Thai who can speak only two English words: no speak!.

Afterwards, we rode the Seaside Line to Kanazawa-Hakkei, and transferred to Keikyu Line to Yokosuka-Chou - Divina’s and my first time riding the trains - to the Disaster Prevention Center where we experienced a simulation of earthquake, fire and smoke. We took turns by group and we actually had fun during the simulation. We also watched a film about the different tragedies and disasters that happened in Japan, and how the people helped each other to survive. It was quite depressing but at the same time very inspiring.

During the simulation, we experienced an intensity 6 earthquake and we had to hide under the small table. Good thing we were made of 3 women and 2 men. Most of us were skinny so we were able to hide very well. After the tremors stopped, we had to use fire extinguishers to put out a virtual fire. It worked like those shooting games in arcade where you can just point to the screen, a circle will appear to point your target, and just shoot. When the fire was out, we had to walk a smoke-filled hallway to the exit. All in all, it was not scary - it was almost funny (we have to shout “kajida!” while putting out the fire - but I guess real life situation will be a lot worse.

Now, after all that adventure, I am slaving away on my computer trying to find our target places tomorrow while watching a Japanese Shin Chan cartoon. Hopefully, we’ll have a successful mission. Wish us luck!

day 3.. octopus game :D

Third day. Quite boring, actually. We had a lecture about Japanese manners and behaviors. There are so many rules to follow, especially about garbage disposal. We also had a group exercise about segregating garbage. I think we did well, although we were confused about the different types of paper.

In the afternoon, we had a guest speaker who lectured about the characteristics of Japanese companies. There were so many differences between the Philippines and Japanese companies, especially with regards to salary and retirement. I realized that being in a Japanese company is both a blessing and a curse. It got me thinking on what my future would be if I stayed or if I leave.

After class, we decided to roam around; Divina wanted to got Syomyoji Temple after class, unfortunately, it closes around 16:30 which meant we won’t make it on time. Instead, we just went to the 4th floor to wash our clothes. But bad luck seems to follow our trail. We got the laundry room and found out that it was very different from what we envisioned. And we also didn’t have detergent, which would beat the purpose of washing. Fortunately, there was a nice lady who helped us figure out how to operate the machine - she even gave us some detergent!

Our day’s adventure ended with our clothes hanging out to dry in the balcony and me watching an octopus game on TV. I was not able to take pictures, but I assume that Divina did. I can’t wait for our trip tomorrow at the Disaster Prevention Center. :D
